When you have no time the chances of delivering the best product in an efficient way with high quality decreases drastically. Especially when you have no experience in some field. To be honest, the design is something you should deliver to professionals (they already have experience and have done a lot of research to be able to understand project’s complexity). When we say that your design should be innovative we mean that it should be created with modern tools, new and fresh, following modern trends in design. Good design emphasizes the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it. Aesthetic design can be created only when you pay attention to all the details – this way you’ll make it visually beautiful. Good design makes a product understandable by showing its structure. Unobtrusive design should set an emphasize on a product rather than itself, it should be neutral enough to leave the room for user’s expression. The honest design is not manipulating with consumer’s perception, it aims to show what exists but not promise something unlikely possible. The long-lasting design is an antipode to a fashionable design that fades away quite quickly. Note, that a fashionable design is not an innovative design we mentioned above. So, we hope you know the difference between them. The thorough design leaves no chances something could be left unattended. And the last thing in this list is too obvious – your design should be as little as possible. That makes it clear, simple, pointing only essential aspects.
The real advantage of being in a small startup is that your users start in dozens rather than the hundreds. You can get a decent amount of data to step in and in the end, the impact of the failures are smaller. This will enable you to remedy the bad experiences with less trouble.
In most cases, when you just started you have no proper experience in design. So we prepared some tips about what you have to discuss with your designer. Pay attention to the next moments:
Less is more. Let’s take an example of a website for your startup. Because most small business and startup sites have fewer than a dozen pages total, the homepage is an important anchor for your overall site. It must be simple enough to answer several important questions – including who you are and what you do. Take one simple message and bring it to the main page. Don’t overload it with texts and images. If you do it will create confusion and poor user experience. Take into account, that during the average visit, users read only 28% of the words.

- Clearness (quality)
When approving the design make sure all the images, illustrations or animations are clear and have good resolution for needed devices. This question also concerns the field of legacy: sources or stocks you use should provide all the items with appropriate license to use.
- Weight (=loading time)
Except checking the weight of your visual content, you have to take care of your hardware infrastructure and bandwidth to support the designs. This is especially critical if you’re serving a large customer base and expect substantial traffic to your site (app or whatever you do). You can improve your site load times by picking good hosts.
This is the matter for users with slow internet connection and, for example, those who have bad eyesight. Consider using larger, more readable font sizes for your content. As screen resolution has improved, many displays show smaller fonts in a too tiny to read size. Also, the design of your product should be similar for all the pages (if we’re talking about the website) or sections.
- Responsive design
Regardless what your product is, remember, that nowadays more and more people use smartphones instead of a desktop. Responsive design allows you to have a single product on the web (if we’re talking about the site) that automatically fits the screen size of the device on which it is being viewed. This is achieved by adapting the content, design, navigation, and method of interaction to deliver the same comfort and usability to the mobile user as to the desktop user.
Now you know the main points to discuss before creating the design for your startup. But there’s also one important thing you have to always keep an eye on. Study your successful competitors – especially those that have been in business longer than you. Look at their products and study how they are presented. Study their site colors, the tone of voice, use of graphics, illustrations and photos, and the overall site organization. Don’t be afraid to use bolder colors. In the past, people have used muted colors, but we’re expecting to see more saturated and vibrant colors this year.
