Fluid typography techniques are growing in popularity. But what do you know about fluid typography exactly? Ok, Syndicode will tell you that it is an option for a web to have a practically infinite number of screen sizes to support. But is fluid web typography ready to be used? Let’s figure it out.

Our starting point of learning fluid web typography is responsive web typography. It was adopted with the most common approach to web design today and it’s becoming popular because you can use mobile layouts and font sizes, set a base font size and define other sizes based on that. But what if we need to think about other devices and screen sizes and re-arrange the layout of our website and redefine the font sizes accordingly. Then we can use media queries to set the breakpoints where these shifts in layout actually happen. So, basically, the responsive web typography advantages are:

  • Users that remain in control of font size.
  • A few media queries can cover a large part of different screen widths.

If you want a better option and more advanced approach, look closer to the fully fluid typography. Here we can use the viewport height and viewport width units to set the size of anything in CSS, even the font sizes. But… it only works in combination with responsive typography. But unlike in responsive web typography approach, we need a lot of media queries to limit the resizing of fonts.
