At the beginning of 2018, we have made a comparative list of 7 Sharetribe alternatives you can use to create an online marketplace. Since that time we received many comments and letters about other alternatives we didn’t include in our previous issue. We’re going to fix this situation in our ‘New Sharetribe alternatives for 2018’. Additionally, some things changed for the last year contestants. So we’ll also tell a bit about those changes.

Despite Syndicode supports the idea that online marketplace development can be provided in the most efficient way only from scratch, using Ruby on Rails framework, sometimes we do use Sharetribe for our projects and can highly recommend this platform. Some of the projects we developed using Sharetribe are Strainly and Testagogo. Explore them to evaluate our level.

Sharetribe is one of marketplace open systems and platforms we talked about in our material 3 ways to create an online marketplace. It is a good solution for those who want to launch in a short timeframe. It is great for creating peer-to-peer marketplaces but not for multi-vendor marketplaces with organized storefronts.

However, if you want to choose a marketplace development platform, you need more information. You should know all the available alternatives and what they can do. Note, that today all the marketplace development platforms offer their service:

  • No coding required
  • Easy to set-up
  • Feature rich
  • Simple to customize
  • Fully hosted

So that makes it even harder to choose one!

Everything started from our article about self-hosted Sharetribe, where you could learn about its main advantages and problems. It is worth mentioning that this year Sharetribe solved some of its main disadvantages. To name,

  1. In 2018, Sharetribe added the support for Stripe Connect so anyone can now do online payments in Sharetribe Go open-source marketplace Stripe Connect. You can learn more about this update on GitHub.
  2. Now Sharetribe allows the export of a hashed password. This was not possible earlier but they’ve improved security and you can now specifically request an export with a hashed password. You can learn more here.
  3. Sharetribe Flex was introduced this March. It provides a flexible booking flow, can be expanded on demand, has customizable UI & UX and received the ability to adjust the visual elements and design.

The other alternative solutions we mentioned earlier have also received some improvements. And, of course, we added some new platforms to the comparison! Apart from Near Me, Marketplacer, Izberg, Mirakl, Arcadier, Cocorico and Multivendor CS-Cart, here you will find Yo!Kart, Marketplaces Inc and Origami Marketplace!

New Sharetribe alternatives for 2018

  1. Near Me | Marketplace Software

We included Near Me in the previous article without mentioning its vital features. First of all, Near Me can handle huge traffic and provides updates automatically. Marketing integrations with Stripe, Balanced, and Paypal are coming out-of-the-box, and social media integrations too. Moreover, there are so-called ‘Enterprise service partners’ to help to build custom integrations. Near Me is a high-price solution that offers intricate design services and different layers of software.
    Pricing
    From $200 billed monthly.
    Who’s using?
    Cisco, Intel.

  2. Yo!Kart

We didn’t include Yo!Kart before and that was a huge mistake. This multivendor eCommerce platform enables creating your own online marketplace in an easy, quick, and cost-effective manner. Yo!Kart is compatible with most add-ons and comes with in-built integrations like ShipStation, Google Maps, Google Analytics, Mailchimp, etc. that make audience targeting and sales possible on an e-commerce marketplace. Like Near Me, Yo!Kart has 13 built-in Payment Gateways including PayPal, Amazon, and Stripe. It has a whole park of pre-built theme templates and customized design. Also, it provides database backup and multi-currency functionality.
    Pricing
From $999 for the fully owned license.
    Who’s using?
    Loved Labels,  Mode & Seek.

  3. Marketplacer

Marketplacer is a bit different from its competitors in terms of integrated services. Unlike most of the marketplace platforms that are using MailChimp, Google Analytics, PayPal etc, this global platform is using SendGrid, 3SIXTY1 and Adyen. Well, Marketplacer was born in Australia, and that might explain the different approach. In other customized marketplace development principles, it is similar to its competitors. The feature that stands out from the majority is ‘Multiple revenue models’ that can be instituted independently or together.

    Who’s using?
    Red Balloon.

  4. Izberg

When we described Izberg last time, we talked about that this solution is not very appropriate for small companies. On the other hand, it can be used for already existed sites or mobile apps via integration regardless of the used CMS. Izberg shines when you need to expand your product catalog or digitize the transactions. It has a modular and flexible architecture and fully available by REST API.
    Pricing
    Not stated.
    Who’s using?
    Pixmania, vente-privee.

  5. Marketplaces Inc

Marketplaces Ins is a fully automated marketplace development platform appropriate for multi-vendor online marketplaces. It has the whole typical set of features from customization and integrations to SEO and advertisement options. What is really good about Marketplaces Inc, is the option for vendors when they can choose which regions & countries they wish to sell their items to and define custom pricing by product groups. Also, this platform provides free SSL certificate and never charges on the number of visitors or traffic to your store.
    Pricing
From $99 for a startup option.
    Who’s using?
    Loubilou, Rosas Crafts.

  6. Mirakl

We have included Mirakl to our previous material about Sharetribe alternatives saying about its only one disadvantage – the low level of adoption (because of the relatively small user base). Like the rest of marketplace development platforms, Mirakl offers a bunch of customization-integration features. The good thing about  Mirakl is the level of security that is provided on several compliances: Encryption, Backup policy, OWASP.
    Pricing
    Not stated.
    Who’s using?
    Auchan, Best Buy Canada.

  7. Arcadier

Despite Arcadier can’t scale smoothly as your marketplace grows, this platform gives you an outstanding friendly user experience. Its interface is very simple and rich with the all basic functions you need. Technically, Arcadier offers the same things that its competitors do, but a bit cheaper and in a simple-to-understand way. Another nice thing to mention is a bonus – Bulk Shipping option. Sellers can offer cheaper shipping surcharges for multiple quantities of different items as long as they use the same delivery method.
    Pricing
From $34. Also, they offer 30 days free trial period.
    Who’s using?
    Not stated.

  8. Origami Marketplace

Origami Marketplace is the new item on our list. This is a French marketplace development platform that offers creating customizable and scalable online marketplaces. It is not as popular as its competitors but offers almost the same: modular architecture compatible with the most of the CMS on the market. Delivery, payment, vendor management and more…
    Pricing
    Not stated.
    Who’s using?
    Commentseruiner, CuteLand.

  9. Cocorico

Cocorico is another French platform delivering custom online marketplace building. What is special about this solution is that Cocorico is specializing in service marketplaces, and doesn’t yet offer a solution for the product retail side of marketplaces. But this is an open source and developers can choose all the needed plugins from the library themselves. Another unique thing is ‘Cocosearch Marketplace Algorithm’ for improving the conversion with analyzing userэs behavior, availability, and geographic location.

    Who’s using?

    ClicLoc, DogVacances.

  10. Multivendor CS-Cart

Multivendor CS-Cart empowered with a bunch of themes, templates and rich documentation, plus 3 months of free premium support. Except all mentioned above common for marketplace platforms features, Multivendor CS-Cart includes over 70 built-in certified payment services. You can complete your online marketplace with any needed feature from ‘Customer Experience’, ‘Site Management’, ‘Marketing’ and ‘Integrations’ sections. Build it like a constructor. The bad thing you might face is the slow down on the server because of too many smart features.

    Pricing
From $385 for a whole lifetime.
    Who’s using?
    ShopClues, Yumbles.

All of the presented alternatives give you a wide range of options to choose from. And the main difference usually lies in the price, support, and scalability. However, don’t forget that the real custom and unique online marketplace is usually built from scratch. Contact us about marketplace development with Ruby on Rails.
